Find the name of a song with these utilities!
There are a few ways to find the name of a song when you don’t what it is, by sampling part of the song, typing in a few words of the lyrics or in some cases if you can hum or whistle the tune. You can even have a program search your computer for unlabeled songs and it will find the name and artist and properly tag them.
If you know a couple words of the song lyrics, you can use Google to find the name of the song. Just put in a few words of the lyrics in quotations, and then add the word lyrics. For example, if you Google like this:
“aint got no money” lyrics
The first result will be “The Way I Are” by Timbaland which has the phrase ‘I aint got no money’.
Many of you are already familiar with Shazam, an app for the iPhone and other PDA’s that recognizes songs that are played by recording a part of the song which it then compares with a huge database of music and informs you of the song artist name and title.
What if you want to identify songs from your PC without an iPhone? Tunatic for the Mac or PC will do the job just fine and it’s free! Installs in seconds. Listens to the audio playing on your PC, from any media player, website or even from your Microphone, and properly identifies the song using a database similar to Shazam’s. The difference is that the database is maintained by a community of users via Tunalyzer a utility allowing users to label songs. I have personally used Tunatic and found that it works quite effectively.
Music Brainz Picard is another utility for the PC or Mac which will identify songs. It works in a similar way using Acoustic Sampling, and is also effective. Additionally, you can tag and organize your mp3 collection using Musicbrainz, they also have an iTunes plugin called Magic Tagger
What if you don’t have the song but only know how generally it sounds? If you can hum it, Midiomi can possibly find it. The app runs completely online so there is no software to install, works on Mac or PC. The service isn’t perfect yet, but can be helpful to identify that song you don’t know the name of that is stuck in your head.
When you’re done, use my Search Engine to listen to and download the song!
